Although almost everyone is coachable, coaching is not the right solution for every situation. A typical coaching relationship involves periodic telephone conversations or face-to-face meetings. Coaching provides a one-on-one opportunity to discuss challenges and opportunities for professional growth. It is a relationship grounded in mutual respect, confidentiality, and open communication.
Coaching works best when the following factors are present.
The individual is:
- Curious to explore new approaches and methods
- Willing to devote time to reflecting on their experience and observing their actions
- Able to identify specific issues or opportunities as a basis for discussion
- Interested in focusing on skills that may have been neglected in the past, such as a highly technical professional whose previous lack of interest in interpersonal dynamics is now limiting his career.
- Specific about what they want to achieve through coaching
- Seeking feedback and insight on how to improve
- Reliably able to complete actions committed to during coaching sessions
- Ready to notice “blind spots” and learn from them
- Able to attend scheduled sessions or cancel with appropriate notice
