With your coach, you will clarify the issues, generate options, strategize about actions, and work through barriers that limit your effectiveness.
Discussions with your coach put your interests first and focus on your agenda: What are you experiencing? Where do you want to go? Which options for moving forward are most attractive? What is standing in your way? Which actions can move you closer to your vision?
Considering Coaching?
A typical coach relationship involves periodic telephone conversations and optional face-to-face meetings. Some coaching relationships are part of a larger organizational project; others are initiated by individuals who want to stretch their boundaries and become the type of leader that is both effective and authentic to their individuality. Many leaders simply begin a coaching relationship because they are facing challenges and want to work through them.
For all coaching relationships, the coach and the client have unique responsibilities:
An IWS Coach is responsible for:
- Asking questions to draw out the client's wisdom
- Providing a safe and confidential environment to discuss important issues
- Offering appropriate suggestions and alternatives to consider
- Taking a genuine interest in the client's work and developing an understanding of the dynamics of their situation
- Listening deeply
- Providing relevant industry knowledge where applicable
- Helping the client be accountable to themselves
- Celebrating client's successes with them
A Coaching Client is responsible for:
- Identifying the most pressing issues as a basis for discussion
- Considering new ways of thinking about old problems
- Selecting the actions they believe will move them forward and completing the necessary work
- Attending scheduled sessions or canceling with appropriate notice
- Demonstrating a willingness to explore habitual behavior patterns
- Being the owner of their process -- no one can force you to "develop" or "grow", nor can anyone do it for you
- Identifying and celebrating accomplishments and successes
